Available Positions

Company Artists and Apprentice Roles

Company and Apprentice Artists serve as the core performing ensemble of the organization. These artists participate in the full scope of company activity, including rehearsals, performances, community engagement, and organizational initiatives throughout the season.

Apprentice Artists work alongside Company Artists in a professional training and mentorship environment, shadowing company processes while gaining performance experience and deepening artistic development. Expectations for apprentices closely mirror those of Company Artists, with an emphasis on learning, growth, and integration into company practices.

Artists in these roles are contracted for the season (August 1 - May 31) and are expected to maintain consistent availability, professional communication, and active participation in rehearsals, performances, outreach, and related company activities as assigned.

MADCO is actively working toward sustainable, artist-centered compensation models:

Company Artists - Paid monthly throughout active rehearsal and performance periods; Compensation reflects rehearsal hours, performances, and designated company activities; Additional performance or project-based compensation may be available depending on programming and funding; Anticipated compensation ranges and schedule expectations will be shared during the offer process; Final season dates, rehearsal expectations, and hourly pay rates are confirmed within individual contracts.

Apprentice Artists - Apprentices train and perform alongside the company; Compensation is provided for performances and designated projects; Specific expectations and pay details are outlined in individual agreements.

Company and Apprentice Artists represent the organization publicly and artistically, contributing to the creative culture, collaborative environment, and overall mission of the company.

Ideal candidates are:

  • Strong contemporary movers
  • Creative collaborators
  • Comfortable in rehearsal-driven processes
  • Interested in performance, creation, and community engagement

Books in Motion Teaching Artist

Books in Motion is MADCO’s touring dance and literacy program, bringing performance-based arts experiences into schools and community spaces throughout the St. Louis region. Teaching Artists collaborate in the creation, rehearsal, and performance of interactive repertory while leading movement workshops that connect dance, storytelling, and learning.

Books in Motion Teaching Artists serve as both performers and artist-educators, representing MADCO in diverse educational and community environments.

Programming occurs approximately 1–2 times per month (October–April) and includes daytime school residencies culminating in daytime student performances and evening community presentations.

Teaching Artists are engaged on a project-based contract and compensated per residency and performance period.

This role is ideal for artists interested in collaborative creation, community engagement, and performance experiences beyond traditional theater settings.

Project-Based Dance Artist

MADCO seeks dancers interested in working with the company on a project-by-project basis during the 2026–2027 season.

Project-Based Dance Artists are invited to participate in company classes and rehearsals as appropriate and may be selected for performances, touring engagements, or special projects based on artistic needs throughout the season.

These positions are structured as performance-based contracts. Participation does not guarantee performance opportunities; artists are engaged and compensated only when contracted for specific projects.

This role is ideal for artists seeking continued training, creative collaboration, and periodic performance opportunities while maintaining other professional commitments.
