Dare to Dance is BACK!
In the true MADCO spirit of innovation and collaboration, talented artists from near and far will have the opportunity to showcase their work in this year’s festival, presented at COCA's Catherine B. Berges Theatre. The Modern American Dance Company is proud to present a platform for 36 choreographers to share their work, collaborate with artists from across the country, and to select one local and national choreographer to set work on the company. DARE to MOVE!
Rooted in Graham technique, this modern masterclass explores breath-driven movement, contraction and release, and the relationship between weight and intention. The class moves through floorwork and standing phrases that honor the form’s dramatic clarity while inviting dancers to investigate strength and softening, effort and yield, and the space between falling and recovery. Class concludes with phrasework from my own choreographic practice, demonstrating how this movement language lives and evolves within contemporary work.
Mikey's Contemporary forms class is a stew of Classical Western and Africanist forms. The class lives in the tension between choreography and improvisation, between codification and freedom, bringing awareness to what lives in our bodies that we might simultaneously lean into our history while trying the impossible task of escaping it.
Jazz Funk explores the fusion of classical jazz technique with commercial and street dance aesthetics. In this class we will blend foundational jazz concepts with popular movement styles such as house and hip-hop, exploring each dancer's own versatility. This class will start with a warm up, across the floor progressions, and end with a combination focused encouraging the exploration of individual artistry.
